“On their splendid Hindemith CD (Ondine), violinist Midori and conductor Christoph Eschenbach show how to trace Hindemith’s wealth of ideas by other means. In the 1939 concerto, the composer created a highly virtuosic work for the violin, an instrument played as masterfully as the viola. The technical demands of the soloist are accordingly high. Japanese violinist Midori (born 1971 in Osaka) proves to be more than up to these technical challenges. Between finely polished melodies and expressive outbursts she maintains a close dialogue with the disciplined NDR symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach. The third movement, simply called Lebhaft[vivid], culminates in the delicate top notes of the violin, which effectively compete with the massive tutti parts and demand tremendous character and self-assertion from the soloist. A veritable marvel of sonority; perfect concert material. It should be performed more often.” Spiegel online
